The HOWELL Get-Together will take place at the Como Community Building, with lunch featuring covered dishes.  This has traditionally been the time that the members of the Jake Howell Famiy gathered, first to honor him at his birthday and now to enjoy catching up with each other.  That being said, any of the Howells who trace their origin to the Como area are welcomed to join us!

Annie Celestia Winstead Glover died at her residence Sunrise Assisted Living in Raleigh NC.  Her funeral service and burial was held back at the home church of the Glover family -- Spring Branch Baptist Church -- on Feb. 18th.  It was a warm and comforting reminder of the happiness she brought into the lives of many over her 91 years of living.

The Cyrus Howell family gathered for their traditional visit and meal on the day after Thanksgiving in Raleigh at the home of Ken and Lucinda.  The older members delighted in having the younger ones, Jay, Mary Catherine, Emma, Ansley, Rylie, and new this year, Reagan, with us.

The Nash Winstead Family reunion was held on this Sunday, August 30, 2009 in the fellowship hall of Leasburg Methodist Church.  Annie, Lizzie, and Jean were there along with lots of their children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.  As always, there was lots of good food and it was good to see everyone.  Some of us had trouble remembering names or figuring out who folks whom we didn't know.  One suggestion was to have name tags next year.

It was a fun day and was well attended.  Thanks for all who helped prepare and organize the event, especially Jean and her family.

Uncle Hunter and Aunt Frances, the last of their generation in this family, were not able to attend the reunion due to poor health.  Hunter died later that afternoon at the nursing facility they have called home for nearly two years.  His keen mind and life experience of over 95 years made him a fascinating conversationalist.  Although he was not a HOWELL, he joined the family 67 years ago when he married Jake's youngest child, Frances.  [Hunter's obituary]

In spite of the hot, humid weather, descendants & other relatives of Jake Howell met at the Como Community building. In keeping with family get-togethers of the 1950s, there was a fish fry.  The menu included catfish, whiting, and herring, along with boiled potatoes, slaw, hush puppies, and a good number of side dishes and desserts.  No one went home hungry!  Afterward a few folks drove to the Britt-Taylor-Howell cemetery on the nearby Parker's Ferry road to see the graves of Jake's father, baby brother, grandmother Howell, and most likely his grandfather Howell. [Lucinda's comments]

13-16 May 2009
The National Genealogical Society met at the Raleigh Convention Center.  Over 1600 people from all across the US attended.  We were pleased that it went well.  The next NGS conference will be in April, 2010 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
